When flying from Heathrow I often stay overnight and I've learned its always a good idea to get a hotel within the freeflow area (usually on Bath Road).
A lot of people don't realise this area exists and pay £4-50 or more each way for transfers on the hoppa buses when just a short walk outside your hotel gates will get you a free bus ride to your terminal.
In fact the service buses are often more regular than the hoppas and quicker as they do't have to drive into each hotel onroute.
You can check timetables on the bus companies own websites.
Some useful maps here showing the "freeflow" area and also which hotels are on the route and within the area.

Also other links for trains etc.
Keep saving the pennies it goes towards the next holiday.
